About Us

The Treasure Hunt CrewJohn R. Meredith's nephew came to him one day nearly 50 years ago and excitedly showed him a circulated 1909 wheat penny that he had bought for 50 cents. At the time, Mr. Meredith was a stockbroker. He was astounded as he thought to himself, 'All my life I've been waiting for a stock to jump from 1 to 50.' It was also then that Mr. Meredith decided to go into the coin business!

Soon after, he went to the local Gimbels store and asked if he could open a coin and stamp department on their premises. They agreed and the business quickly flourished. Mr. Meredith continued to excel in the coin business right up to his passing in 1995.

Treasure Hunt is still a family business, serving residents of the greater Pittsburgh area for almost 50 years. At one point, the business was in six Pittsburgh Gimbels stores, which later became Kaufmann's. Treasure Hunt then transitioned to nine freestanding locations in the region.

Siblings John Meredith and Jeannette Meredith Dodd have been in the coin and jewelry business for most of their lives. They began by helping their father pack and sort coins and today they own and operate the family business.

Treasure Hunt's mission is and always has been to offer the best choices for people buying or selling rare gold and silver coins, gold jewelry, paper money and precious metals, including .999 silver, gold, platinum and sterling.

Our large customer base enables us to pay more than small dealers, in-home gold parties and the 'here-today-gone-tomorrow' companies that set up shop for a weekend. We pay more than anyone...every time!

"We respect and care about our customers -- and anyone buying or selling coins or jewelry. That is why we ask that they beware of companies that promise cash for sending your valuable gold to them in their mail-in envelopes. It's best to do business face-to-face, or with a reputable business like ours that has earned the public's trust," states John.

"Our father started the business in 1963 with a focus on honesty, integrity and personal service," adds Jeannette. "My brother, John, and I have worked for the business since we were teenagers and we are very proud to carry on that family tradition."

Treasure Hunt also has one of the largest displays in the area of coins and collecting supplies. Surveillance systems at all of our locations helps ensure the facilities are safe and secure.

The Irwin location in the Irwin Plaza on Route 30 also offers big discounts on modern, vintage and estate jewelry. You'll find fantastic deals that are half the price of jewelry stores. Stop in today for a great gift for someone special -- or for yourself!

Every Treasure Hunt employee has a heart of gold. Please stop in and meet us!
